LA PASIÓN DEL FÚTBOL

En la novela “Los Amantes del Río” el protagonista Triggon vive una intensa pasión por su amor, la hermosa Arcadia.

Él es capaz de hacer casi cualquier cosa por Arcadia. Quiere que Arcadia se sienta feliz, gozosa y por sobre todo, la mejor mujer del mundo.

Pero si Arcadia falla en cualquier asunto específico, si muestra que no es capaz de vencer una situación difícil, entonces Triggon se enoja, hasta insulta a Arcadia, le da su espalda, y llevará tiempo reparar esas relaciones y hacer que ambos se entiendan para ser los amanes que fueron anteriormente.

Algo similar sucede actualmente con la Copa Mundial de la FIFA y los hinchas de los países participantes.

Cuando fueron capaces de clasificar e ir a Rusia, todo era esperanza, expectativa y un firme deseo de ganar y ganar.

Pero cuando un fuerte rival impone una derrota, inmediatamente comienza una contagiosa animosidad contra el equipo, y desde los comentarios de periodistas a las blasfemias de algunos hinchas, hay crítica y la más implacable condena para el equipo, el Director Técnico y para ciertos jugadores.

No hubo traición, simplemente el equipo no pudo superar a su ocasional rival.

Lo que es peor, los barrabravas  --a muchos de los cuales no se les permite entrar o no tienen dinero para estar en el estadio— en el colmo del fanatismo profieren insultos a los circunstanciales adversarios y a sus países, rompiendo, pisoteando o quemando sus banderas.

Y esto pasa porque lo que es una confrontación deportiva tomada con un buen espíritu competitivo por los jugadores en la cancha, llega a ser una especie de guerra entre algunos fanáticos de diferentes países.

Manifiestan viejas rivalidades históricas y temas que hasta ahora están en disputa entre sus países y hacen de lo que debería ser una disfrutable expresión deportiva por parte de los mejores jugadores y equipos del mundo, una muy triste y lamentable manifestación de infames pasiones de la peor especie.

Esas mentes retrógradas y alteradas son afortunadamente la excepción, pero no obstante, son muchas, y en algunos países abundan más que en otros.

Cuando se juega una Copa Mundial, lo que hay es una fiesta deportiva al máximo nivel. Así hay que encararla, vivirla y disfrutarla.

Aún cuando un equipo pierda y no pueda continuar en la competencia, se le debe recibir en su país con un abrazo y gratitud por haber alcanzado lo más alto que pudo.

Siempre habrá otra oportunidad.

THE PASSION OF FOOTBALL (soccer)

In the novel “The Lovers of the River” the character Triggon lives an intense passion for his love, the beautiful Arcadia.

He is capable of doing almost anything for Arcadia. He wants Arcadia to feel happy, joyful and above all, the best woman on Earth.

But if Arcadia fails on any specific matter, if she shows she is not capable to overcome a difficult situation, then, Triggon becomes angry, even insults Arcadia, gives her his back, and it will take time to repair those relations and to make that both come together to be the lovers they were before.

Something similar happens currently with the FIFA World Cup and the fans of the participating countries.

When they were able to qualify and go to Russia, all was hope, expectative, and a strong wish to win and win.

But when a strong rival imposes a defeat, immediately starts a contagious animosity against the team, and from the comments of journalists to the blasphemies of some fans, there is a criticism and the most ruthless condemnation for the team, the coach, and for certain players.

There was no betrayal, simply the team could not overcome its occasional rival.

What is worst, the hooligans –many of whom are not allowed or don’t have the money to be in the stadium—  at the height of fanaticism proffer insults to the circumstantial adversaries and to their countries, publicly trampling breaking or burning their flags.

Because what is a sportive confrontation taken with a good competitive spirit in the field by the players, comes to be a kind of war among some fanatics of different countries.

They manifest old historical rivalries and issues that until today are in dispute among their countries and make of what should be just a joyful expression of the sport by the best players and teams of the World in a very sad and regretful manifestation of infamous passions of the worst kind.

Those delayed and altered minds are fortunately the exceptions, but nevertheless, there are many, and in some countries, they abound more than in others. 

When a World Cup is played, what is there is a sports party at the highest level. So you have to take it and so you have to live it and enjoy it.

Even when a team loses, and cannot continue in the race, you must receive it back in your country with a hug and thanks for reaching as high as it could.

There will always be another opportunity.

EVOCANDO A MI PADRE - EVOKING MY FATHER

Este 17 de Junio se celebra el Día del Padre en Estados Unidos.

Eso me lleva a recordar a mi padre, Washington Bernardo Hourcade. 

Y al recordarle, con cariño, con emoción y añoranza, siento profundamente su  ausencia.

Mi padre no sólo era mi consejero, sino mi gran locutor válido. Si hay algo que extraño por sobre todo, eran las extensas conversaciones que tenía con él.

De pensamiento esclarecido e inspirador, mi padre discurría sobre problemas del mundo, del país, o del vecindario. 

Pero sobre todo, analizaba con gran sagacidad las cuestiones políticas. Tras de sí tenía una militancia de décadas en filas del Partido Colorado Batllismo.

También abordábamos aspectos concernientes a la fe cristiana, y por supuesto, temas y situaciones personales.

Soy consciente de cuántas veces lo he echado de menos, y cuántas hubiese querido aún tenerlo conmigo.

Desde la Eternidad, sigue siendo para mí un referente ineludible, el que forma parte de mi personalidad: honestidad, sinceridad, rectitud, hombría de bien. Así era él. Así deseo siempre ser yo. ¡Gracias por siempre, querido padre!

 EVOKING MY FATHER

This June 17 is celebrated Father's Day in the United States.

That brings me to remember my father, Washington Bernardo Hourcade.

And as I remember him, with affection, with emotion and longing, I deeply feel his absence.

My father was not only my adviser, but my great valid speaker. If there is something I miss above all, it was the extensive conversations I had with him.

Of enlightened and inspiring thought, my father spoke about problems of the world, of the country, or of the neighborhood.

But above all, he analyzed political issues with great sagacity. After him he had a militancy of decades in the ranks of the Colorado Batllismo Party.

We also addressed aspects concerning the Christian faith, and of course, personal issues and situations.

I am aware of how many times I have missed him, and how many I still wanted to have him with me.

From the Eternity, it continues being for me an ineludible reference, the one that forms part of my personality: honesty, sincerity, rectitude, manliness of well. That was him. So I always want to be me. Thanks forever, dear father!
