WHAT’S A VACATION FOR?

First of all, it is to relax. To leave behind the efforts of a study, the tedious discipline of a job, or just simply to change the environment.

And this last thing is what I am still doing.

The main reason to leave Iowa City was the cruel cold that has to be suffered every winter. And this one has been particularly and extremely cold.

Good days, sunny days, time to walk, know places, participate in cultural activities, enjoying the company of good friends and even doing nothing. That’s nice!

It’s also a calm time to read books, to think about future activities and plan changes in our lives.

For all that is vacation time.

But also it is the moment to know the people living on a given place, the way they develop relationships, their cultural level, how a city looks, how happy or worry its inhabitants are, etc.

Being in Montevideo, there are not too many surprises to me. I was born in this city and lived here for 47 years. But…people have changed; the way they deal with each other is not the same. Education has gone down. Vagabonds have increased exponentially and homeless are almost everywhere. Young women embrace violence, and society as a whole is fractured.

Of course that in the middle of all this there are exceptions, and very relevant for sure. But they are that, exceptions.

It is not necessary to underline that this is not the Montevideo I knew until I lived here.

I came to this city trying to benefit from the good temperature of summer and to enjoy the company of good friends whom I love very much.

Unless something substantial changes in the country after the coming elections, I will not return.

There are many other places in the world where I can enjoy more a vacation, although I am aware I will sacrifice not seeing my friends.

¿QUIÉN TIENE LA CORBATA DE JOSÉ LUIS PERALES?

Era 1985, Uruguay había recién salido de un régimen militar excepcional en su historia, y recobrado la libertad y la democracia.

La gente pacífica y ordenadamente se reunió en la principal avenida de la ciudad capital –Montevideo—para celebrar el retorno a lo que había sido tradicional en el país.

Dos escenarios se erigieron en dos lugares céntricos. Uno en la Plaza Cagancha  y el otro en la intersección de la calle Colonia y la Avenida del Libertador.

Yo estaba con mi familia frente a este escenario donde actuaron una cantidad de cantantautores uruguayos y argentinos. Pero todos esperaban la actuación del artista español José Luis Perales.

Un poco atrasado en llegar desde el aeropuerto, finalmente el artista accedió comenzó su show adhiriéndose a la celebración del pueblo uruguayo y el retorno a la democracia.

En un momento de su espectáculo un grupo de hinchas comenzó a pedirle su corbata.

Sorprendido, el cantante dijo: “¿Cómo? ¿Qué queréis mi corbata?...” y un grupo de jóvenes le contestó que sí. Siguió un breve diálogo, y finalmente Perales dijo, “Está bien, aquí la tenéis” y arrojó su corbata al público.

Alguien –obviamente—se quedó con la corbata.

Lo que no sé hasta el día de hoy es quién se quedó con la corbata de José Luis Perales.

¿Podría tener esa persona la gentileza de responder públicamente a esta pregunta?

Sería lindo, ¿no les parece?

WHO HAS THE TIE OF JOSÉ LUIS PERALES?

It was 1985, Uruguay just came out of a military rule exceptionally in its history, and recovered freedom and democracy.

The people, peacefully and orderly met in the main avenue of the capital city –Montevideo—to celebrate the return to what has been traditional in the country.

Two stages were erected in two places downtown. One in the Cagancha Square and the other in the intersection of Colonia street and Del Libertador Avenue.

I was with my family in front of this stage where performed a number of singers and songwriters from Uruguay and Argentina. But everybody was waiting for the performance of the famous Spanish singer Juan Luis Perales.

A little bit late to reach the place coming from the airport, finally, the artist reached the stage and started his show, adhering to the celebration of the Uruguayan people and the return to democracy.

At one moment of his performance, some fans started asking for his tie.

Surprised, the singer said: “What? That you want my tie?”, and a group of young people replied yes. A little dialog continued and finally, Perales said: “Ok, here it goes” and throw his tie to the public. 

Someone –obviously- got that tie.

What I don’t know until today is who kept the tie of José Luis Perales.

Would that person have the kindness to answer publicly this question?

It would be nice, don’t you?

HOLLYWOOD, ¿CUÁL ES EL VALOR DE UN SER HUMANO?

¿Cuál es el valor de un ser humano?
 

Esta puede ser una pregunta tramposa.

Si sólo tomamos en cuenta al cuerpo humano, sus partes, órganos, fluidos, metales, etc. el precio puede ir de 45 millones de dólares, a l.200 millones de dólares.

Eso es lo que somos en términos materiales.

Pero si tomamos en cuenta al ser humano, no su cuerpo, sino su inteligencia, su ingenio, múltiples capacidades, acciones, iniciativas, contribuciones a la sociedad, etc. entonces no podemos medir eso en dólares. Esta consideración escapa ese estrecho marco.

Todo llegará al reconocimiento y apreciación del ser humano como tal, y su papel en la sociedad.

Lamentablemente, para los “creativos” de Hollywood, esos que escriben guiones para series de TV, películas y juegos electrónicos, el valor de un ser humano es cercano a cero.

Un ser humano para ellos es alguien que puede ser destruido psicológicamente o asesinado físicamente en las formas más horribles.

No les doy un gran valor como seres humanos, porque están vacíos de las mejores cualidades que un ser humano puede tener como tal.

Odio, revancha, violencia, destrucción en formas espectaculares e inimaginables son las únicas ideas que tienen en mente.

Realmente son personas enfermas. Ellas y sus productos deberían ser repudiados.

Una sociedad saludable no les debería permitir usar TV y películas, juegos, lenguaje y otras formas de comunicación para compartir, transmitir, vender y expandir esa insanía.

Pero –en lo que considero personalmente un mal y distorsionado uso de la libertad de expresión— se les permite a esas personas estar a cargo y hacerte sentir que eres nada.

Que tu valor como ser humano es nada.

Que tú no cuentas, después de todo.

No puedo menos que repudiar fuertemente y desde el fondo de mi corazón semejante enfoque y tal forma de pensar y hacer de esos llamados “creativos”.

Es hora de que Hollywood ofrezca algo mejor. Algo realmente humano, algo que fortalezca valores en lugar de algo que sistemáticamente los destruye.

Cuando nos aproximamos a los Oscars, ¿tomará en cuenta Hollywood el valor de un ser humano?
