When I saw that two high schools in one small city of
Uruguay –in South America— didn’t have a telescope to teach Astronomy and that
an amateurs astronomers group – the Society of Friends of Astronomy of Dolores —lack
of one of those instruments, I decided by myself to donate one but most
important I felt the call of love and
solidarity that won my heart.
At that moment I have had a precedent when I decided that
a telescope would be an appropriate gift to the Association of Amateurs
Astronomers that meets at the Planetarium of Montevideo, the capital city.
That, having into account the important work of teaching
how to look at the sky and train young people in the basics of Astronomy, and
how useful would be to provide them with another instrument of this kind.
Two telescopes are now in Uruguay due to my decision to
donate them.
But in the case of the city of Dolores, knowing that the
educational institutions will use the telescope to teach youngsters the basics
of Astronomy, gave me an extra motivation to bring the second instrument of
this kind.
And now I want to share with you how happy I feel for
what I have done. How compensated I am by the recognition of the people of
Dolores and for the use they will do of the telescope there.
These are little things that enrich our own lives, that
show us how good is to be generous, and how nice is to have the feeling that we
have been useful to others.
And at the very end, I could think that the day I won't
be any longer over the face of the Earth, nevertheless, those telescopes will
continue serving for generations and --in a certain way-- they will tell them
something about me.
